CHATHAM, NJ - On Thanksgiving morning before chowing down on turkey and mashed potatoes, 435 Chatham residents got some exercise for a good cause when they participated in the 4th annual Thanksgiving Day Chatham Turkey Trot.
The Chatham Turkey Trot is a registered 501(c) (3) non-profit organization. It organizes and hosts the annual Chatham Turkey Trot, a one Mile Family Fun Run and 5K Race in which runners race through the scenic Highlands section of Chatham Township on Thanksgiving Day.
Sponsors of the race this year included Lead Underwriter: Investors Bank; Underwriter: Klas Electrical Contractors; Gold Sponsors: Allstate:John Hawk Agency; Silver Sponsors: Dreyer's Lumber & Hardware, Kitchen Intuitions, KraftMaster Renovations, Shop Rite, and Simonfay Landscape Services. Video Production: YouHere Productions.
Matt Keane and his 8-year-old son Connor ran in the 5K for the first time and were a little nervous because Matt said they "aren't in the best shape." After participating in a similar event called Ryan’s Run, they were excited to run and help raise money for charity, Keane said.
One youngster, who has been running in the event since it started, is seventh grader Jack Burns, who lives on the street it takes place on. He and his friends participate and always have a blast, he said. Because he plays soccer, it’s easy for him and its good exercise before sitting down and eating all day, Burns said.
“It was here so I thought it’d be fun to do,” he said.
Chatham residents Jill and Joe Arens came out with their four children and had fun, Joe said. This is their second year doing it, yet he said he wasn’t sure if he was in the best shape to run five miles.
“It’s a good pre-Thanksgiving event and it’s good to be out with neighbors and friends,” he said.
