What do health care professionals, social justice advocates, working families’ activists, environmentalists and a Baptist pastor have in common, right here in Piscataway?

They’ve all endorsed Piscataway’s Column A Democrats in this important primary: Bill Irwin for Mayor, with Ralph Johnson, Laura Leibowitz and Kamuela ‘Nikki’ Tillman for Council.

Rev. Dr. Leonard Hampton, the senior pastor of Zion Hill Baptist Church, wrote: “We need their leadership skills and vision for long overdue change in Piscataway, to make local government a more comprehensive, open and approachable body to the entire community.”

NJ’s Health Professionals and Allied Employees AFT/AFL-CIO union, representing 14,000 nurses and healthcare workers, recognized “your leadership and vision for providing safe staffing levels…and preserving workers’ rights…”

NJ Citizen Action cited the candidates’ “enduring commitment to progress, justice and equality…We need leaders who not only get things done, but also govern with compassion.”

Food & Water Action said: “This election is an opportunity to advance a bold, progressive agenda for the township, prioritizing our health and environment over unnecessary, dangerous and polluting development projects.”

Leadership. Vision. Justice. Equality. Compassion. Openness. Integrity. Courage. Action. Change.

In these challenging times, we need leaders in the forefront of change, not decades behind in their policies and values.  We need leaders lifting up community voices, not hiding inside a political machine.
