CHATHAM, NJ - On November 3, 2020, at 2:37 a.m., Chatham Township Officers were dispatched to a Westminster Road address for four individuals attempting to break into a vehicle. Prior to the officer’s arrival, the suspects fled the area on foot and in a vehicle. Chatham Township Officers observed the vehicle, a white Mercedes SUV, fleeing the area at a high rate of speed with two occupants.
The vehicle was later learned to be stolen from another jurisdiction. Officers from
Chatham Borough, Madison, Long Hill Township, Harding Township and the Morris County Sheriff’s Department assisted with attempting to locate the suspects who fled on foot. Chatham Borough police located and stopped a suspicious vehicle on Runnymede Road that was occupied by three males, one of which fit the description of one of the suspects. A passenger, N. Hobson- Brown, 19 of Newark, NJ was later charged with Possession of CDS and released pending a future Municipal Court appearance.
During the continued search for the suspects, Police were alerted by a resident on Westminster Road that someone had entered their garage and then stole a bicycle. The resident provided officers with a description of the suspect who was apprehended by Patrolman Ronald Anderson of the Chatham Township Police Department on Southern Boulevard near Lafayette Avenue.
The suspect, a 16-year-old male from Irvington, NJ was placed under arrest and transported to police Headquarters. Further investigation revealed that the juvenile was one of the suspects attempting to steal the vehicle on Westminster Road. The juvenile was charged with Burglary and theft and released to the custody of his mother. The Chatham Township Police continue to urge residents to keep their vehicles and homes secured. All items of value should be removed from vehicles that are not in use.
