Shoplifting Arrest

On October 7, 2020 a Walgreens store manager notified SOPD of a shoplifter that just exited his store and fled with unknown items. A description was broadcasted and an individual was stopped on Irvington Avenue matching the description of the suspect. After a brief stop, Cecil Mitchell-Thomas, a 29-year-old Newark resident was found to be in possession of 36 cans of Red Bull energy drink. Mr. Mitchell-Thomas was placed under arrest without incident and transported to SOPD where he was processed accordingly and released on a summons.  

Bike thefts

On October 9 and 14 two bikes were stolen from the Train Station during the afternoon hours. One of the bikes was secured and the suspect was able to cut the lock; the second bike was left unattended. Detective Bureau is investigating the thefts.  

Auto Theft Arrest

On July 7, 2020 a resident on Speir Drive reported his Ford Explorer stolen from his driveway. Victim reported this to SOPD and, utilizing the vehicle's GPS, the Explorer was recovered a short time later on Cary Street in Orange.  After an investigation by South Orange Detectives a suspect was developed and charges were filed against Jahsir Velez, a 19-year-old West Orange resident.  On October 6 Velez was arrested in Freehold Township on unrelated charges and transported to Monmouth County Jail. Then on October 7 Monmouth County Jail turned Velez over to this agency and Velez was transported back to SOPD where he gave detectives a statement confessing to the theft of the Explorer. Velez was transported to the Essex County Jail awaiting his Court appearance.
