I have been a resident of Piscataway for over 15 years, and am proud to be the longest serving public school teacher at Piscataway High School. As a teacher of and advocate for children with special needs, I value and practice open communication and transparency. One of my many concerns is what I have called “the stonewall of silence” that so many residents have experienced when trying to communicate with our local officials, especially at the Council Meetings. I believe our neighbors and taxpayers deserve to be heard and treated with respect.
I am glad to be running with the Column A Democrats to bring leaders who will listen and learn together. You can read our full platform for change here. We are the Dems On Your Side!
I am an active volunteer in the community, previously serving on the boards of NJ District of Kiwanis International, AttachAvi Autism and Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple. I am also the assistant director of a summer camp for children with special needs, Camp Lee Mar. I am disappointed not to be able to go there this summer, due to the pandemic, but am glad to be here at home in Piscataway.
I am married to Seth Leibowitz, and the proud mom of Emma, Taylin and Jonah. I won a very close election last year as one of Possumtown’s Democratic County Committee representatives. After a narrow loss in 2017, I ran again last year, knocking on doors and registering new voters to be part of the Democratic Party. I was a plaintiff in the CJPD lawsuit to end gender discrimination against women and LGBTQ individuals in County Committee races, and I proudly carried my district after four provisional ballots were counted for me.
I believe every vote should count and that all elected officials should be communicating about what is happening openly and honestly. Please reach out to me directly if you have any questions or concerns; you can reach me by email at lauraleibowitz@gmail. I am happy to talk with Piscataway residents about what we can do together.
