UPDATED:  The traffic accident on Route 17 is expected to be cleared shortly.  The accident involved a tow truck towing a PSEG truck hit the NJ Transit tressel, according to East Rutherford Police.  Engineers are on scene checking the tressel for damage at this time.

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - An accident has closed several lanes of Route 17 North and South in East Rutherford near Liberty Commons Shopping Center.

According to 511NJ, "As of 1:00pm, there's a Crash and a Fuel spill on NJ 17 southbound South of East Union Av in East Rutherford. All lanes closed and detoured northbound 2 lanes closed, 10-15 minute delay."

The New Jersey DOT issued a statement "Route 17, both directions, left and center lanes closed, North of Highland Cross, Rutherford due to crash and fuel spill. Use caution, slow down and expect delays."

A photo from Nutley resident Kristin Alana, who was caught in the traffic delay for 40 minutes, shows a PSE&G perched on the Jersey barrier that separates north and southbound lanes.
