SPARTA, NJ - The Sparta Spartans took on the Pope John Lions for the second leg of the cross-town rivalry on Sunday afternoon. Sparta dominated from the jump winning 52-26 on Senior Day.
With it being their day, the seniors took control. Dan Sandow and Luke Kopko got huge minutes for the Spartans... and they did not disappoint. In the first quarter alone Sandow and Kopko combined for 11 points to help the Spartans jump out to a 19-4 lead.
Sparta continued to cruise in the second quarter extending the lead to 35-9 at halftime. The Spartan's offense was lethal, hitting eight 3's in the first half alone.
“When we play like that we believe we are the best team around,” Kopko said after the game.
Pope John came out strong in the third quarter and Sparta head coach Brian Brennan had to take a quick timeout to settle the Spartans down.
“We had to remind them in the timeout, games aren’t won at halftime” Brennan said.
The Spartans regained control after the timeout and never looked back from there, winning convincingly 52-26. On the special day, Sparta’s seniors combined for 39 of the team’s 52 points.
Sandow and Alkovic led the way with 11 and 10 points respectively, but the Spartans stuffed the box score with eight different players contributing. Matt Silvey, Mike McGovern, Peyton Trent, Luke Szabo, Kopco and Colby Plotts each put up points for the win.
The Spartans head into the final week of the season as they face Newton on Wednesday and Montville on Friday.
