SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — As the winter sports season gets underway, the Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School Boys Ice Hockey team is gearing up for another year, and looking to a few players to lead them through what is one of the craziest seasons the program has seen sofar. Led by Head Coach Matt Gunther and Assistant Coach Matt Giannacio, the group is hopeful of having a successful season with a few players rising to the occasion and leading the charge into battle.

The coaches will be relying on a few key players to step into bigger roles with the team to contribute offensively, defensively, and between the pipes. Coach Gunther, who spoke with TAPinto Scotch Plains-Fanwood says his offensive weapons are seniors Lucas Mackey and William Mauer. On the flip side, he cites junior defenseman Zack Harmer to lock it down in front of the team’s last line of defense, senior goaltender Paul Harris.

Lucas Mackey, one of the seniors expected to be a leading scorer for the team this year is very excited for the season, and is excited about the group they have in the locker room. He believes that team chemistry is to be a big component of their success. Despite being shut down for a two-week quarantine to start the season, he believes he and his teammates will come back ready to leave it all out there every time they take the ice.

“I am really proud of this team’s ability to adjust to anything that life throws at us. Obviously being shut down two weeks into our season is not ideal, but many of us have been keeping busy. This is a very tight-knit group of young men and women who love the game,” Mackey said. “This year brings a new opportunity. The seniors in the locker room focused on team bonding to create a cohesive unit who will go out there and lay it on the line for the Raiders. Whether this season is a full 15 games or a few practices, we will look to dominate the opportunities we are given and bring home a division title to Raider Nation.”

Given the current pandemic, the team expects to face many challenges this season while competing in the McMullen Division of the NJIIHL (New Jersey Interscholastic Ice Hockey League). Graduating 10 varsity seniors after last season was a tough blow to the Raiders’ roster but despite this loss of personnel, the team is confident coming into the year.

“Although we graduated 10 varsity seniors last year, I have great confidence in our underclassmen to step up to the plate and fill the shoes of last years impact players. This season definitely has its struggles with all that is going on in the world right now, but we are very hopefully of having a successful season,” said varsity coach Matt Gunther.

As the schedule currently stands, the Raiders will have their season opener against Dayton on Friday, Jan. 22, at 6:00 p.m. at Warinanco Park.
