PATERSON, NJ - PSE&G has announced that with work expected to resume on Monday, February 8, following this week’s storm, over the next two weeks work crews will be replacing gas mains on Marshall Street near 21st Avenue and on Market Street near Hamilton Street.
This work coincides with the utility’s city-wide effort to make gas delivery to local homes and businesses safer, cleaner and more efficient. While residents and businesses may experience temporary road closures, local police officers will be on site to direct vehicle and pedestrian traffic during this time.
PSE&G crews are also continuing service upgrade work, a process that, because of its proximity to homeowner’s property lines, requires less digging up of roads. This work is slated for:
- East 22nd Street near 21st Avenue
- East 23rd Street near 22nd Avenue
- Market Street near East 25th Street
The project, started in December 2019, is part of PSE&G’s Gas System Modernization Program (GSMP), and includes the replacement of nearly 20 miles of cast iron pipes with new, more durable, plastic pipes. Delayed because of the COVID-19 outbreak, work is expected to continue until the fall of 2021 and is performed weather permitting.
Following the installation of new main and services, technicians schedule times with homeowners to connect their service to the new system, during which time customers can expect to lose service for about four hours. Gas meters will be relocated to the outside of the property, and technicians will relight all appliances and ensure that they are working properly before leaving the premises.
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, and in the interest of maintaining the safety of customers, employees and their families, PSE&G workers and PSE&G contractors follow safety protocols guided by the CDC and NJ State Department of Health, as well as all directives from the Governor’s Office and county/municipal governments. When entering homes, PSE&G technicians will be wearing personal protective equipment and will maintain physical distancing throughout the appointment. Customers are asked to help maintain a safe distance during the appointments and to allow technicians to enter through the nearest entryway in proximity to the meter set location.
