NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ -- Stephanie Willoughby caught up with Susan Barbaglia, Owner of Skin Deep Salon and Spa, to see how she has been faring during the COVID-19 pandemic. Barbaglia had previously appeared on TAPintoTV, when she was celebrating Skin Deep’s 25 years of being in business.

When the pandemic began to take hold in New Jersey, the days leading up to the salon’s closure were stressful. Clients were cancelling and Barbaglia was awaiting word on when they would be asked to close. On March 19, they were told that they had to quickly close the next day, March 20.

During the months that the salon was closed, Barbaglia spent her time calling clients, rescheduling appointments, developing new protocols, and purchasing gear to ensure safety, such as plexiglass windows, thermometers, health checklists, hospital-grade fabrics on chairs, and even walls on wheels to create barriers between stations. “In the past three months, I don’t think I’ve ever worked as hard,” she said. “It’s a lot that has to be done.”

In addition, the salon will open at 8am on certain days to accommodate older customers and those with underlying health conditions that make them more vulnerable to serious outcomes if they are infected with COVID-19. Barbaglia is also fortunate to have a lot of space for creating distance and three separate doors so customer traffic can be more controlled.

It was announced that New Jersey salons were allowed to reopen on June 22 as part of the state’s reopening plan. On that date, Barbaglia said she was planning to meet with her department heads to review protocols and have a trial run, and then full staff and clientele would be welcomed back on the 23rd.

At the time we spoke with Barbaglia, New Jersey had not released safety guidelines for salon reopenings, which had been frustrating, but they have since been issued. Barbaglia “had to take it upon myself to be proactive and to get the ball rolling.”
