Dr. Rosalie Greenberg, the host of Kids First on HomeTowne Television, sees many children in her practice, and like so many other NJ clinicians has seen her number of clients on the autistic spectrum rise even more than psychiatrists in the rest of the country.

“With 1 in 94 children in NJ being on the autism spectrum, compared with 1 in 150 nationwide, I wanted to discuss the topic to bring as much information possible not just to local parents, but to other family members and the greater community such as local business people, caregivers and educators,” she explains. “Because so many children are affected in such a wide variety of ways, there is a very good chance that you know or soon will know of someone with some form of autism. People really need to understand that some of these children can be incredibly gifted and some can be very intelligent. ”

Dr. Sherie Novotny, a child and adolescent psychiatrist and an assistant professor of psychiatry at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Shawn Ortiz, a mom of an 18 year old son with high functioning autism, help Dr. Greenberg to humanize the disorder by providing medical expertise and a personal perspective on raising a child with autism.

The show includes a discussion of what the terms autism and autistic spectrum disorders mean and the importance of early intervention by multiple specialists.

Closing the show is Kids Corner, with Molly Babos, who this month reminds viewers how much fun a trip Van Saun Park in River Edge can be. There’s a petting zoo, small train ride, historic carousal, bike paths and much more to keep the whole family busy.
Next month Kids First is scheduled to tackle the question, “When do I change from my child’s pediatrician to an adolescent physician?”
