EAST HANOVER, NJ - Since 1996 a statue of Christoper Columbus has stood proudly on Ridgedale Avenue in East Hanover.

Yesterday, June 30th at 4:30 pm there were rumors of a protest taking pace to take down the statue. The protest never materialized. What did materialize though were over 100 people gathering at 4 pm to support the statue.

The rumored protest to take down the statue comes in the wake of the untimely death of George Floyd which has sparked social justice movements across the nation. The people against this statue of Columbus and others like it say they believe that it stands for injustice because of the cruel treatment of Native Americans.

On the flip side the people who rallied in support of the statue said they believe that it stands for the bravery and cunning-ness of a man that sailed across the Atlantic Ocean. A large number of the people who stood in support of this statue also said they believe that it embodies the culture and pride of Italian-Americans.

Several of the supporters wore t-shirts with the phrase “Italian Lives Matter..... Cause who’s going to make the gravy”.
