WOOD-RIDGE, NJ - Wood-Ridge scored a run in the bottom on the seventh inning on a base-loaded error to eek out a 1-0 win over Hasbrouck Heights Wednesday evening at Donna Ricker Field in Wood-Ridge.
The game was a tight battle all night, as both teams received solid pitching and good defense throughout the game. The Aviators threw out two Blue Devils runners at the plate in earlier innings.
Before the game, Hasbrouck Heights honored its five senior members of the team, Matt Baker, Mario Gomez, Spencer Lee, Gabe Zuniga and team manager Andre Brown.
“I can't say enough about this senior class,” said Hasbrouck Heights coach Pat Gabriele. “They were freshmen when I was hired as the head coach and over four years I have seen tremendous growth as players, but more importantly as young men. The work ethic and leadership they have shown to the program and the underclassmen will be greatly missed. Each senior class is tough to say goodbye to, but for me personally, this one will be a bit harder because of what they had to endure. Just a special bunch of kids."
Hasbrouck Heights starter Spencer Lee pitched five innings before being relieved by fellow senior Mario Gomez. Lee left to a standing ovation from the Hasbrouck Heights crowd and teammates while moving to shortstop.
The game was the final game of the summer for both Wood-Ridge and Hasbrouck Heights.
