BELMAR, NJ — With openings still remaining for Belmar’s summer camp — open to first- through sixth-graders from Belmar and Lake Como — preregistration will continue from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. today, April 16 at Taylor Pavilion.

The seven-week program — to run Monday through Friday from June 28 to August 13 — will be limited to 70 campers due to the state’s current coronavirus restrictions. Everyone on the preregistration list will be notified when online registration opens.

If all spots are filled today, the Recreation Department will compile a waiting list of those who do not make the cut so that they can be contacted should someone decide not to register or if state COVID-19 rules change to allow for more participants.

The camp is open to Belmar and Lake Como children only, who will be entering grades 1 to 6 in September. The cost is $800 per child with additional children from the same household receiving a 25% discount per child. Payment is due in full at the time of online registration.

Located at 500 Ocean Avenue, Taylor Pavilion will serve as home base for the program, to be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays during the seven-week period. To avoid congestion along the beachfront, drop-off and pickup times will be staggered at several designated locations in the area of the pavilion.

While the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of last year’s summer camp, daily events and activities in past years have included arts and crafts, sports, beach activities, movie days, and visits to Belmar’s parks and playgrounds, and the Belmar Public Library.

Recreation Director Barry Trogu said that plans are being finalizing for the return of the Belmar Junior Lifeguard Program, summer basketball to be held at Dempsey Park’s newly resurfaced 16th Avenue courts, pickup baseball following the end of Little League play, and the Kids’ Running Club in July and August.

Also in the works for youngsters are a new tennis program to be held at Maclearie Park, kickball and beach soccer.
