HAWTHORNE, NJ - Sunday morning a young boy walking with his family near the park bridge by the outfield section of the park was hit by a softball.

The softball game was immediately stopped and Passaic County Parks Department workers on a golf cart responded to the scene, according to witnesses.  The police and Hawthorne Ambulance Corps pulled in shortly thereafter.

The condition of the child was not severe and he was described as alert, taken back by his parents.

"The responders were on the scene pretty quickly," a witness at the nearby dog run said.  "This highlights the potential danger of having those fields with no fence and the paths in clear line of the ball."
