WESTFIELD, NJ — Westfield candidates for mayor and ward council seats sounded off Oct. 24 at a forum sponsored by The Westfield Leader in conjunction with TV36. Lauren Barr of The Leader moderated.

The forum began with questions to Republican Sam Della Fera, who is running unopposed for reelection to his First Ward council seat. As chair of the council’s finance policy committee, he fielded questions about spending, saying that the town spent what it could to fix Westfield’s roads and paved all or parts of 80 roads in town since he was elected four years ago.

Regarding the increased bill from the Rahway Valley Sewage Authority, he said that although there is now a sewage bill, the town still subsidizes the bill to the RVSA.

“In 2014, we will move to a consumption model for our sewage fee,” said Della Fera.

In his closing statements , Della Fera said he would work to “protect and preserve our way of life.” He said that even though there had been a “perfect storm” of economic dilemas, “Westfield is in better financial shape than it was four years ago.”

The entire debate will be available for viewing on TV36 and on The Westfield Leader’s Website, www.goleader.com.
