WESTFIELD, NJ — As Westfield prepares for the first snowstorm of 2014, Westfield Police Chief David Wayman is asking residents to stay off the roads and remove parked cars from the streets so that they can be properly plowed.

“Enforcement of parking on those roadways designated as ‘no parking on snow-covered roadways’ will be done,” Wayman warned.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the area from Thursday, Jan. 2, at 6 p.m. until 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 3. Heavy snowfall with blowing and drifting snow are expected to create hazardous road conditions.

The area will likely get four to eight inches of snow, high winds up to 25 miles per hour, with a wind chill of five below zero and temperatures that will dip into the single digits by Friday, according to the service. Union County announced that it will be under a “Code Blue” severe weather advisory for the homeless, to guide them to shelter.

In anticipation of the storm, PSE&G said it is taking the following steps:

  • Ensuring that all available personnel are ready to respond beginning Thursday.
  • Arranging for contractors, including tree crews, to assist the utility’s own skilled workforce.
  • Ensuring that additional supplies, such as poles, transformers and other pole-top equipment, are on hand.
  • Ensuring that all vehicles are fueled and ready to go.
  • Testing generators at utility locations.
  • Coordinating with county and municipal emergency management personnel to inform them of outages and expedite restoration efforts.
