WESTFIELD, NJ - It is apparent where the Westfield and West Orange boys lacrosse programs are at this point right from the start.

The Blue Devils scored a little more than two minutes into Saturday's first round Group 4 state playoff game and would not look back.

The fourth-seeded Westfield team would go on to an 18-2 victory over 29th-seeded Mountaineers in the Group 4 state playoff matchup in the first round. The Blue Devils raised their record to 10-7 while the Mountaineers finished the season at 8-11.

Westfield hosts 13th-seeded Columbia on Tuesday at Kehler Stadium in the second round of Group 4. Columbia defeated 20th-seeded Brick Memorial, 13-7, on Saturday.

On Saturday the Blue Devils attackers peppered West Orange goalie Daniel Shelley often during the first half and had the contest in control with a 12-2 lead by halftime.

Westfield attacker Matt Webb rang up his three goals and two assists all that came in the first half. "It was a good to get a win and get everybody a chance to play," said Webb about the victory.

Westfield came into the state playoff off of two tough losses, to Summit in the Union County Tournament final (12-1 on May 12) and Pingry (9-5 on May 17) for the annual Bristol Cup.

Despite some of the recent losses, the state playoff victory topped the 2011 team that lost in the first round of the state playoffs. "We were looking to go further than last year's team," said Webb that included going to the county final. The 2011 edition of the Blue Devils lost in the UCT semi-finals.

West Orange head coach Brian Cohen said that Westfield's 10-7 record is not indicative of the quality of the team. "That team is much better than their record," said Cohen. "They are a very good team and play some very good teams."

For West Orange, making the state tournament was an accomplishment for the program that is only seven years old. It was only four years ago that West Orange did not register a single win during the season.

"We have come a long way and we want to be in the same position as they are," said Cohen about Westfield.

With Westfield's 2012 goals accomplished the Blue Devils team would like to at least have a crack at the top seed, Bridgewater-Raritan, that would come in the semi-finals on May 26. Westfield would have to win a couple of games before that becomes reality. "We want to have a chance at them," said Webb.

In addition to Webb, Westfield received 10 different players who scored in the contest led by five Blue Devils who notched two goals each in Dane Huber, Jack Flaherty, Sam Rosenburgh, Abe Fertig-Cohen and Nick Arnold.

The lone West Orange goals came from Sheldon Piggot and Daniel Schuster.

Both Mountaineers goals came in the first half, but by that time Westfield built a 12-2 lead. Nick Arnold gave the Blue Devils a 6-0 lead with a minute to go in the first period and then Webb scored his third goal of the game to push the Westfield advantage to 12-1.

Westfield got on the board first with a goal from Fertig-Cohen who shot the ball past Shelley with 9:40 on the clock in the first quarter.

For West Orange the only goals came in the last seconds of the first quarter and the second quarter.
