WEST ORANGE, NJ - Dan Duca is a busy man. In addition to being a long time Chemistry teacher at West Orange High School, Duca is a well known DJ in the tri-state area. But sometimes, it's not enough to be busy. Duca, like most Jerseyans, loves the Jersey Shore and wanted to do something to help those still suffering from the effects of Hurricane Sandy. And so, Open Mic Night at the Shillelagh Club was born.
The event was casual and low key, with friends and patrons of the Shillelagh Club getting up to sing and play, usually on a variety of instruments. There was no cover charge but donations were accepted for Hurricane Sandy relief.
The pub had a local feel and patrons were able to enjoy the music and be able to talk to one another at the same time. The bartender was friendly and the drinks were priced inexpensively. The pub is open to the public Monday-Sunday.
The Shillelagh Club, located at 648 Prospect Avenue in West Orange, is the Home of the Order of the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh. They are an Irish American charitable organization that is active in Essex County and supportive of the West Orange Community.
The Shillelagh Club members have been hard at work building an outdoor deck, which will be completed shortly.
Duca plans another Open Mic Jam for August. The date is yet to be announced.
