WEST ORANGE, NJ - The West Orange Department of Health will be open on Saturday, October 19, to receive applications for same-sex marriages. This comes after a ruling by the New Jersey Supreme Court that New Jersey must begin granting same sex marriages. Their ruling noted that "in a unanimous ruling, found that the state had "not shown a reasonable probability it will succeed on the merits."
New Jersey becomes the 14th state to recognize same-sex marriage.
The West Orange Health Department will be open from 9 am to 12 pm to receive applications for same-sex marriages. Applications can be completed at Town Hall (room 203), located at 66 Main Street. One of the applicants must be a West Orange resident. The fee is $28 and can be paid in cash or check. Call 973-325-4121 for more information.
"Under New Jersey law, all people wishing to be married must file a marriage license application at least 72 hours in advance of the ceremony. Any couples who have filed the appropriate state-required paperwork on Saturday will be able to be legally married Tuesday morning. Applicants may try to get a waiver on Monday at the Essex County Court House," stated Jessica Glicker, Public Information Officer for the township.
“I am happy to announce that West Orange is now accepting applications for same sex marriages," Mayor Robert D. Parisi said. “As soon as the ruling came down we started to get calls from couples who wanted to apply for marriage licenses.”
