Lautenberg, Menendez Announce More Than $2.8 Million To Hire Hoboken And West Orange Firefighters
NEWARK – Today, U.S. Senators Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Robert Menendez (D-NJ) announced that the Hoboken and West Orange Fire Departments have received more than $2.8 million in federal funding to hire firefighters through the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program.
The Hoboken Fire Department received $1,118,600 to hire new firefighters, and the West Orange Fire Department received $1,755,610 for hiring.
“Through this federal funding, the fire departments in Hoboken and West Orange will be able to hire more firefighters to help keep their communities safe,” said Senator Lautenberg, Vice Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security, which funds the SAFER program. “As state budget cuts are squeezing local municipalities we'll keep working at the federal level to support New Jersey fire departments.”
“Thanks to this funding, Hoboken and West Orange fire departments will be able to hire the fire fighters they need to continue responding to local emergencies effectively.” said Senator Menendez. “Tough budget times call for tough cuts, but one thing we must fund without question are the local fire departments and emergency first responders that serve our communities and families.”
As Vice Chairman of the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, Senator Lautenberg has worked to provide sufficient funding for the SAFER program. The SAFER grant program provides funding directly to fire departments and volunteer firefighter organizations in order to help them increase the number of trained “front line” firefighters in their communities.
