WEST ORANGE, NJ - On Saturday, January 12, the West Orange High School Winter Color Guard treated Family and Friends with a run-through performance of their 2013 Program, which they will perform at the January 19 annual MAIN (Mid-Atlantic Indoor Network) competition.  The Guard performed their 2013 show titled “If You Need a Friend” to Roberta Flack’s musical version of the song “Bridge Over Troubled Waters.” The performance is specially created for the Color Guard, capturing choreography that the Guard presents beautifully. The Guard also uses flags, rifles, and sabers throughout their performance.

Prior to the performance, Guard instructor Louis Hellinger spoke briefly to parents, thanking them for their constant support and to also credit how hard the Color Guard has worked to get to this point.  Hellinger also spoke about the show choice and said “finding the emotional connection and having the kids match the show is the best environment. “  Hellinger and instructor PJ Tankard also had members of the guard demonstrate the techniques of flag spinning/tossing and artillery spinning/tossing to visually demonstrate the process to parents. All members of the Guard began on flags; the next step is rifle, and finally saber.

The Winter Color Guard is made up of 19 members of West Orange High School and they have two Captains, Senior Grace Groeger and Junior Phelps Toussaint. The members of the Winter Color Guard have worked incredibly hard to get to the point they are now as a nationally ranked team. The guard competes in the A Class section and Hellinger thinks this year may lead to the possibility of promotion to Open Class.  This is also an important year as the 2013 season marks the 10th year of performance for the West Orange Winter Colorguard and the program has come a long way thanks to the support of parents, instructors, West Orange High School music boosters, and band directors.

Next Saturday, January 19th, 2013, the  8th annual MAIN Scholastic (Mid-Atlantic Indoor Network) Competition will be hosted at West Orange High School.  25 Winter Color Guards from the Tri-State Area will come together to compete and perform their 2013 shows. The show begins at 4pm in the West Orange High School Tarnoff Gym; adult tickets are $9 and seniors/students $5. There will also be refreshments sold at the competition.
