WEST ORANGE, NJ - Former Mt. Pleasant PTA President Deborah Sanchez was indicted on July 11, 2012, by an Essex County Grand Jury on two counts: one, on second degree theft charges and a second on third degree forgery charges. The second degree charge represents theft over $75,000 and third degree forgery is a crime of the third degree if "the writing is or purports to be a document issued by the government including money," a New Jersey Prescription Blank or part of an issue of stock, bonds or other instruments representing an interest or claim against any property or enterprise, or access device.
The information was confirmed by Katherine Carter of the Essex County Prosecutor's office. Ms. Sanchez was indicted regarding alleged siphoning of funds paid to the Mt. Pleasant PTA for childcare services. While most sources would not comment on the indictment, one source close to the investigation expressed their sadness over the matter, saying that it was a 'disgrace that our kids missed out on resources that other PTAs provided (such as Smart Boards) to line someone's pockets instead.
A trial date has not yet been set.
