Chatham Boys' Lacrosse Stymied by Post, Ridgewood
Sunday, June 3, 2012 • 9:29am
BRIDGEWATER, NJ - Sometimes the posts are best friends for a lacrosse team.
For the Chatham boys lacrosse team that was not the case with a couple of shots in the second half for the Cougars in the first round of the State Tournament of Champions game against Ridgewood.
The result was that the Cougars season ended with a 6-3 defeat at the hands of the Maroons in the first round of the State Tournament of Champions on Saturday night at Bridgewater-Raritan High School.
In addition to the posts, Chatham, the Group 2 champion, had a bad stretch late in the first half that saw a one-time Chatham 2-1 lead turn into a 4-2 deficit heading into halftime.
For the game the Cougars received goals from David Gill, Kyle Howard-Johnson and Thomas Guida while Ridgewood's Blake Feagles was the only player to have multiple scores with two goals.
The game was actually closer than the three-goal difference.
Chatham was only down by one goal, 4-3, late in the game, but Ridgewood, the Group 3 champion, regained possession with two minutes remaining in the contest.
The Cougars needed to get control of the ball so they had to press the Maroons offense and in turn left a couple of Ridgewood attackers open. Ridgewood would score two goals in the last 100 seconds.
Despite the loss Chatham head coach Anthony Calandra lauded his team that won the Group 2 state title especially the group of seniors. "It was a great season and this group of seniors did a great job," said Calandra whose team finished with a 16-7 record.
In addition it was the first experience for the Chatham players in the STOC while Ridgewood had been at the meet of the best lacrosse teams in the past.
While Ridgewood goalie Noah Pounds stymied the Chatham offense, the post also did in the Cougars offense especially attacker Sam Carson who hit the left post three times in the second half including with 15 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
After being stopped in the first 10 minutes of the second half, Chatham finally got on the board as Christof Strunc fed Howard-Johnson who fired a shot from 10 yards out that went past Pounds to cut the Ridgewood lead to 4-3.
Despite possessing the ball for most of the second half, Chatham could not finish off their chances. "I really liked how we were the aggressors in the second half," said Calandra.
In the first half the game appeared to be headed to a two-all tie into halftime, but Ridgewood took advantage of their opportunities as they scored two goals in the last 90 seconds including the fourth goal with seven seconds left in the first half. "We had three guys on him (Jack Allard) and he made a great effort," said Calandra.
Instead of the Cougars being tied at two, they faced a 4-2 defeat. "I just told them that we had to play harder," said Calandra about the talk at halftime. "I think we were playing on eggs shells in the first half."
Chatham took advantage of a quick start with two goals in the first six minutes of the game that led to a 2-0 Chatham lead with a goal each from Guida and Gill. "They were in man (to start the game) and forced them into zone," said Calandra.
The Ridgewood move to change their seemed to stymie the Cougars offense as the Maroons would score four unanswered goals.
