Open Your Heart and Heal Your Spirit This February
Tuesday, February 7, 2012 • 5:10pm
Have you or your children been feeling down lately, especially around holidays like Valentine's Day? Attend our workshop Living with the Blues: Coping Creatively with Depression on Sunday, Feb. 12th at 2:00 p.m. where you will learn the difference between the “blues” and serious depression, a bio-chemical as well as emotional condition. The truly depressed person cannot be “cheered up” and may, without wishing to, drag others down into the doldrums. Bob Morris will speak from his own experience of over a decade of depressive episodes about survival tips for both those who find themselves in the strange and bleak land of depression, and for those who love them and seek to help. We’ll discuss the major causes for depressive illness, and both medical and alternative approaches to relief. Suggestions for exercise, diet, and helpful meditations. For friends and family, too. The class will meet at Interweave’s Summit Center at 31 Woodland Avenue (on the 2nd floor of Calvary Episcopal Church’s Parish Office) in Summit, NJ. Tuition costs $20 ($15 Members). Tuition is waived for Teens!
Becoming a compassionate person is a life-long process filled with challenges and rewards. Open your heart to love and healing on deeper levels in Enlightening the Heart: Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life led by our Executive Director Bob Morris. Using Karen Armstrong’s latest book, Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life, you will consider and practice specific steps to take in your daily life and relationships which can cultivate compassion—a central value in each of the world’s great spiritual pathways. You’ll study self-love, mindfulness, suffering, sympathetic joy and general concern for others, as well as explore the limits of even the most genuine compassion. Join us for a journey that can change your heart! The class meets for 6 Wednesdays – Feb. 15, 22, 29, Mar. 7, 14, 21 – from 9:30-11:30 a.m. in Interweave’s Summit Center at 31 Woodland Avenue (on the 2nd floor of Calvary Episcopal Church’s Parish Office) in Summit, NJ. Tuition costs $80 ($70 Members) for all 6 sessions, and $20 per drop-in.
Isn’t it time for you to get away from the city bustle for a little while? Though our souls are deeply rooted in nature, indeed, part of nature itself, modern life cuts us off from a life-giving connection with the natural world around us. Ground and center your soul at Coming Home Again: A Day Retreat to Reconnect with Nature on Saturday, February 25th from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the beautiful facilities of the Community of St. John Baptist in Mendham (www.csjb.org). In this contemplative retreat for people of any spiritual tradition, we will, through discussion and experiential exercises, practice reconnecting with our roots in nature. Fletcher Harper, one of the nation’s premier interfaith environmental leaders and Executive Director of GreenFaith, will give you the opportunity to recall and discuss outdoor spiritual experiences, and to learn basic outdoor meditation techniques. Presentation, discussion, silence, and a shared midday lunch. The Community of St. John Baptist is located at 85 West Main Street, Mendham, NJ 07945. The cost is $50 ($45 Members), and registration through Interweave is required.
