SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ - Police today charged 21-year-old David Smith of South Plainfield with attempted murder for allegedly attacking another man with a steak knife in Spring Lake Park on Friday.

According to police reports, off-duty police Sergeant John McConville was visiting a resident on Daniel Street when a neighbor told him two men were fighting in the park. According to the neighbor, one of the men was screaming for help, saying that someone was trying to kill him.

McConville and South Plainfield resident Robert DelPaoli ran into the park, where they saw the men on the ground, with one repeatedly punching the other in the head.

When McConville approached, the man on top tried to flee, but McConville subdued him with DelPaoli’s help.

Police later located a glove and steak knife used during the attack.

DelPaoli provided first aid to the victim, who was bleeding from stab wounds to his face and neck.

According to police, they don’t believe the attack was random, as the two men knew one another.

Smith is currently in jail awaiting bail, which will be set on Monday afternoon.
