WESTFIELD, NJ—On Friday, Jan. 18, the Raiders from Scotch Plains Fanwood High School played the Westfield High School Blue Devils in a competitive game of varsity basketball. The game was at Westfield High School, and was started with a moment of silence for Mark Hollaway, the WHS freshman who died Wednesday due to complications from the flu.
The beginning of the game was marred by a bit of bad sportsmanship from Scotch Plains students yelling rude comments at Westfield's team.
Undeterred, the Blue Devils started the game with the first 3 points, and before the end of the first quarter player number 11 from SPF scored a shot with 17 seconds on the clock. The score at the end of the first quarter was 8-4 in favor of the Blue Devils.
The second quarter was started with WHS player Scott Toresco scoring two shots in a row, bringing WHS up to 10 points with SPF at only 6. Later in the second quarter, Toresco made 2 foul shots, bringing the score up to 19-8, WHS still leading.
By the end of second quarter, Westfield was in the lead with a score of 23-18. The only points SPF scored in the third quarter were 2 foul shots, and Westfield was on a roll, going from 23 points to 39 points. SPF had only 20 points at the end of the third quarter.
Westfield's confidence paid off, and they played the game like seasoned pros. Beating Scotch Plains Fanwood by over 20 points, and the final score was 52-31. "It was a good win for us,” said Westfield coach David Palmieri. “It's always a battle to play Scotch Plains"
Westfield senior Scott Toresco, #42, said, "We were confident and we were going to win going into the game today." The next game Westfield is playing is an away game on Tuesday January 22 against Governor Livingston High School.
