Terrill Middle School Sweeps Science Contest

SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD - At Thursday night’s regular public meeting of the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Board of Education, eight students from Terrill Middle School were recognized as winners of the NJ Applied Science and Technology Council essay contest. The Council sponsored a contest titled “Heroes of Science and Technology”, to promote public interest in science, technology, engineering and industry. Isha Kamdar, an 8th grader at Terrill Middle School, won first place with her essay about Nobel Prize recipient Alfred Gilman. Ms. Kamdar received $300 for her first place award-winning essay.
Mr. Taylor Diggs won 2nd place and Ms. Christine Bernard won 3rd place. Honorary mentions went to Danielle Maizes, Joseph Varela, Alexis Marta and William McGloin, students at Terrill Middle School.
Dr. Kevin Halloway, the Principal of Terrill Middle School, congratulated the students. Mr. Halloway mentioned that the essays were submitted anonymously and Terrill Middle School kept coming up with winners.
At the BOE meeting Mr. Nikhil Patel, a student of Scotch Plains Fanwood High School, was recognized for his first place award from the DCH Teen Safe Driving Foundation. He created a safe driving campaign titled Drive2Live2Drive (http://drive2live2drive.org/).
Also – In the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, the board approved the following revisions to the 2012 - 2013 school calendar:
-Single session will be held on January 21, 2013 (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day)
-Full session will be held on February 18, 2013 (Presidents’ Day)
-Single session will be held for all elementary students grades Pre-K through 4 on June 21, 2013
-Single session will be held for Pre-K through grade 4 students at School One and J.A. Coles Schools on June 24, 2013.
