PATERSON, NJ – The Passaic County Sheriff’s Department says it seized $80,000 worth of heroin during a motor vehicle stop on Market Street Wednesday night.

Detectives from the warrant squad stopped a vehicle at about 10:30 pm when they saw it swerve near the corner of E. 28th Street and noticed the driver was not wearing, according to a statement issued by Passaic County Sheriff Richard H. Berdnik.

The sheriff said one of the detectives shined a flashlight in the rear passenger side window and saw an open black plastic bag with numerous packages wrapped in magazine paper.  The detective recognized the packaging as typical for heroin sales and found 4,407 glassine bags of the drug, Berdnik said.

Arrested were the driver Robert Grady, 36 and his passenger, Marguerite Austin, both of whom are Paterson residents, according to the sheriff’s department. They were charged with possession of heroin, possession of heroin with intent to distribute it and possession of heroin with intent to distribute within 1000 feet of Martin Luther King School.
