PATERSON, NJ - The Paterson Police Department is getting 12 new Harley-Davidson motorcycles.
Under a deal with Harley-Davidson of Long Branch, the 12 motorcycles would cost $189,768, according to the city council resolution approving the purchase.
But the city actually would end up paying just $90,268 in cash, the resolution said. As part of the contract, Paterson would trade-in 11 motorcycles and get $99,500 credit.
In essence, the city would pay less money for each new motorcycle than the dealership would pay for the used vehicles being traded in.
"We're getting a great deal,'' said Police Director Glenn Brown.
The money for the motorcycles will come from account generated by money forfeited by criminals, Brown said, and not from the regular tax levy
