PATERSON, NJ – An 18-year-old man was shot in the leg at 4:43 pm on Sunday while he was walking on 12th Avenue, police said.

The victim, a resident of Madison Avenue, told police he was near the basketball courts when he heard gunshots coming from the area of Godwin Avenue and he fled. But he was wounded in the back of his right leg, police said.

A Good Samaritan then drove the victim to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center, where he is in stable condition, police said.

“It is currently unclear if the victim was targeted or was struck by stray gunfire,’’ said Lt. Patrick Murray, head of the Cease-Fire unit.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact Det. Edgar Taylor or Det. Dave Tanis of the Paterson Police Cease-Fire Unit at 973-321-1342.
