PATERSON, NJ – A man and woman were wounded Monday night outside a convenience store near the corner of Governor and Carroll streets, police said.

The man, a 25-year-old who lives on Hamilton Avenue, was hanging around outside the store at 7:08 pm when two men approached and fired multiple shots, police said. He was wounded in the right leg and in the buttocks, police said.

The woman, a 19-year-old who lives on Van Houten Street, was walking in the area at the time when she heard the gunshots and one of the bullets hit her in the left arm, police said. Both victims are in stable condition at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center. The two of them were not together, according to police.

“The exact motive for this incident is still under investigation at this time,’’ said Lt. Patrick Murray, head of the Cease-Fire unit. “Detectives are currently canvassing the area for possible witnesses, and are asking for assistance from the public.”

Police officers responding to the scene found the man inside the convenience store. The woman fled to her home and called police from there.

In the first two weeks of 2013 there were five non-fatal shootings in Paterson in which seven people were wounded, Murray said.

Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the Paterson Police Cease-Fire Unit at 973-321-1342, or to forward information anonymously by contacting the Paterson Police TIPS Hotline at 973-523-TIPS.
