WANAQUE, NJ - The North Jersey District Water Supply Commission says the fees assessed to Paterson and other municipalities likely will decrease next year.

The agency said its preliminary operating budget for 2013 includes a reduction in expenditures of almost three percent, according to a press release.

The commission is preparing a five-year capital plan that could include more than $70 million in projects to meet the water district’s infrastructure needs, the press release said. The work is needed to address the rehabilitation and replacement of facilities and equipment over the next five years, officials said. The press release did not say what impact the debt payments on those projects would have on future water fees.

“This operating budget was prepared with careful consideration of the current economic challenges faced by our participating municipalities and all expenditures were systematically reviewed in an effort to either hold or reduce expenses,” stated NJDWSC Chairman Charles Shotmeyer in a press release.

“At a time when our member towns are under financial stress as they try to meet their own budgetary needs, we are pleased that we are able to reduce costs to them in this budget, while at the same time actually increasing the amount of money we apply towards our capital plan in 2013,'' Shotmeyer added.

Previously, the Commissioners adopted a resolution limiting their salaries to $1,200 per year and eliminating the practice of providing paid health benefits to Commissioners. In the past, commissioners had received a salary of $7,500 per year. “The Commissioners felt that the adoption of this resolution demonstrates our commitment, during tough economic times, to providing potable water at the lowest possible cost for the benefit of the resi-dents of our State,” said Shotmeyer.
