PATERSON, NJ – Property owners will no longer have to pay fees as high as $500 for the city to send an inspector to check their sidewalk repairs.

Despite objections by administration officials who said the move would eliminate a source of much-needed revenue, the City Council last week voted 6-2 to scrap the fee.

The two council members voting against the ordinance were Ruby Cotton and Kenneth McDaniel. In recent discussions on the issue, the two of them had indicated willingness to adopt a compromise measure that would have reduced the fee but not eliminated.

But other council members asserted that the administration had raised the possibility of a compromise weeks earlier, but never submitted a proposal.

Council members in favor of the elimination said the $500 fee was exorbitant and they argued that it was preventing some folks from getting the work done and prompting others to have their sidewalks repaired illegally, without a city inspection.
