MANVILLE, NJ – The Somerset County Democratic Committee yesterday nominated Clinton Township Mayor Janice Kovach for the CD7 Congressional seat currently held by Republican Leonard Lance.

“I’m pleased to accept this nomination,” Kovach said.  “I know Democrats can win Somerset County not just for Congress, but also at the Freeholder and local levels.”

Recently Kovach spoke in North Plainfield about her chances, and how being from Hunterdon County gave her an advantage over previous Democratic challengers.

“Leonard and I grew up five miles from each other and graduated from the same high school, so he has no home town advantage in Hunterdon against me,” she said.  “He’ll still likely win the county, but by 55 percent instead of the 70 percent he’s been enjoying.  That makes this a winnable race if I do well in other areas like Somerset County.”

“Janice is going to be a fantastic candidate,” said Councilwoman Mary Forbes of North Plainfield. “I think she really has a chance to be the first Democratic woman to represent New Jersey in Congress.”

Earlier in the evening the committee members from CD12 endorsed Franklin Assemblyman Upendra Chivukula for the seat recently left open by Congressman Rush Holt’s decision not to run for reelection.

“I arrive in America with $8 in my pocket and a chance at an education,” said Chivukula.  “I’m running for Congress because American has been great to me.  I want to be sure that the same opportunities that were available to me are there for all kids regardless of race, gender or anything else.”

For Freeholder, the Democrats selected Bridgewater resident Joan Pritchard and Bound Brook resident Tony Pranzatelli to stand for the party in November.
