Livingston High School Alumni Meredith Prescott, alongside best friends Lauren Appel and Alicia D’Souza, has been spending the summer organizing a community 5-Kilometer Walk-A-Thon to be held on Sunday, Aug. 11 as a fundraiser for a blood disorder called Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). ITP is an autoimmune disease that is often ignored, where the body intensifies immune attacks that target and destroy an individual’s platelets. Prescott was diagnosed with this disease in November 2012 at age 21 and has been heart-set on raising awareness and funding for the cause ever since.
Family, friends and various local community members have already registered to become active participants in the event. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. all registered parties will come together at the Livingston Oval and support the cause. Several of Livingston’s restaurants including Nana’s, Argyle Market, the Pretzel Factory and Livingston Bagel have also offered generous donations for the day.
Having the opportunity to raise awareness about this unrecognized and uncommon disease is Prescott’s main inspiration in hosting the event. Anyone interested in registering or donating can go to http://pdsa.donorpages.com/PumpItUpLivingston2013/.
Registration is $20 for adults and $10 for children.
