WEST ORANGE, NJ - Jess Peslak remembers a couple years ago when she pitched in the Essex County Tournament semi-finals.

In that game, Livingston came out on the wrong end, falling to West Essex. At that time, Peslak was a freshman so turn the clock ahead a couple years. As a junior she has gained plenty of experience and it has worked in spades.

On Saturday night Peslak limited Mount St. Dominic to three hits while striking out six as Livingston won its first Essex County Tournament championship since 2006 when the Lancers defeated Bloomfield.

Behind the pitching of Peslak and solid defense, Livingston collected its fourth ECT title with a 2-0 victory over the Lady Lions at Ivy Hill Park in Newark at Seton Hall University. In addition the Lancers raised their unblemished record to 24-0.

"It feels great," said Peslak about her thoughts this time around and credited her defense for backing her up. "It feels like I can throw my pitches. Sammy (shortstop Rothenberger) was great and they were all great."

For this season it was a new pairing of battery mates with Peslak and freshman catcher Marina Lombardi, but the pair have worked outstandingly together.

Both Peslak and Lombardi said that her screw ball and riser were working and tying up the Mount St. Dominic hitters. "It feels incredible," said Lombardi about being a freshman and winning a ECT title.

Peslak's toughest inning came in the fifth when the Lady Lions had runners on first and second with one out. The junior hurler would strike out Gabrielle Lombardi and get Bria Bartsch to foul out.

While the Lancers defense excelled, Livingston took advantage of some Mount St. Dominic miscues in the field.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Livingston first baseman Jazmine Pignatello and Lombardi smacked singles back-to-back to put runners at first and third. "I don't know what pitch it was, but it was my pitch," said Lombardi about slapping a single into right field.

Yinka Fasehun running for Lombardi went to steal second base when Mount St. Dominic catcher Jamie Purcell's throw to second went wide right and in turn all the way to the centerfield wall.

Pinch runner Cate Leu and Fasehun made it all the way to home to give Livingston a 2-0 lead.

And Peslak and the Lancers defense took it the rest of the way as the junior pitcher set down the next six batters to close out Mount St. Dominic.

From the start of the game, the Lancers attitude at the plate was by going right after Mount St. Dominic pitcher Samantha Platt. "We like to be aggressive and go out there fighting," said Lombardi.

In winning the Essex County title, it goes with taking the Super Essex Conference championship and the Lancers will look to complete the triple crown with a Group 4 title.

Livingston starts its drive to win a state title on Tuesday when the top-seeded Lancers host 16th-seeded Hackensack in the first round of Group 4 North 1 state tournament.
