LIVINGSTON, NJ - Last Saturday, Kylie McLaughlin's two-run triple in the fifth inning rallied Livingston to a 6-3 victory over Caravel at the Mount St. Dominic Invitational in Caldwell. Although many of us would see this as the top point of an athlete’s career, this is only one of McLaughlin’s many accomplishments as a starting player on the Livingston High School (LHS) Varsity softball team.

It is for these reasons and because of her strong team leadership that Kylie McLaughlin is being honored as The Alternative Press of Livingston’s Athlete of the Week.

“This season I'm really looking to have fun and enjoy it,” said McLaughlin. “It's the last time I’ll be playing softball at a competitive level since I’ve decided not to play in college.”

Although the season has just begun, McLaughlin has already scored 10 runs and has helped the team to get eight wins and only one loss so far.

“I am hoping that we can win a state championship, since we have lost over the past two years, and it would be really nice to go out with a state championship title.” said McLaughlin.

Last year, McLaughlin was chosen as the Essex County Player of the Year. Throughout the season, she registered 44 hits and 41 runs. McLaughlin also swiped 27 bases and had seven triples to go along with six home runs.

“My softball career has been unreal,” said McLaughlin. “I never expected to have so much success. As a freshman, I was kind of the underdog. It wasn’t until sophomore year that I really found my place at the Varsity level.”

Although she has decided not to play at the University of Delaware, which is where she will be attending college in the fall, McLaughlin has been awarded the Athlete of the Week honor for her skills on the field and her leadership position on the team. Together, they have made her an extremely valuable player to the LHS softball program.

Each week, The Alternative Press (TAP) of Livingston chooses a student Athlete of the Week. Criteria stems from prowess on the field, court or arena to leadership. Articles are written by the Livingston High School Sports Interns, who participate in TAP's program.
