Bad Day Comes at Bad Time for Livingston Softball; Lady Lancers Fall 4-0 to Hunterdon Central
Wednesday, June 6, 2012 • 4:09am
NUTLEY, NJ - The Livingston softball team had taken the field 28 times this season and finished every seven innings with a big W on their side of the ledger.
For many teams, it is something they would love to have on their record, but sooner or later that bad day would come rolling around when events just would not go their way .
Livingston head coach Jason Daily just wishes that day would have come in 2013.
But for Livingston softball, their Waterloo came on Tuesday in Nutley as the Lady Lancers' run to the Group 4 state title came to an end. Livingston lost 4-0 to Hunterdon Central in the semi-finals and missed out on a trip to Toms River for the group title game this weekend.
"I told them that I am really proud of them and there is a lot of pressure when you get to this point," said Daily about his talk after the game.
He added that he was happy to have one last game, a regular season game on Wednesday in Bloomfield. "They get to put their uniforms on one more time," said Daily whose team collected the Super Essex Conference American division title, Essex County Tournament title and a Group 4 North 1 sectional title along the way.
It was not a good day for Livingston (28-1), the Lancers defense and Livingston pitcher Jess Peslak who walked seven batters, but Daily pointed out that it was the team's lack of offense is what did them in. "I told them that you can't win with zero runs," said Daily.
The Red Devils pitcher Kaitlyn Cegielski kept the Lancers batters off balance for most of the game as they could not get a runner to third base.
"We like to bunt, steal and run and we weren't able to work that today," said Daily. "We like to be aggressive. She's (Cegielski) is very impressive and just keep the ball down."
As it turned out Livingston's best chance of scoring came in the bottom of the third inning.
With two outs, Kaitlyn Reilly and Jessica Pignatello smacked singles into the outfield with runners at first and second. But catcher Marina Lombardi grounded out to end the inning.
In the top of the fourth inning and the bases loaded, Peslak knocked down a hit by Alyssa Bauer but she was only able to throw out Bauer at first. Hunterdon Central's Sarah Merlo would be able to scoot across the plate for a 1-0 Red Devils lead.
The critical inning came in the top of the fifth inning. If Peslak and Livingston could have gotten out of the inning down only 1-0, it would have been considered a success.
With the bases loaded Peslak struck out Kim Englehart for the second out. But then Peslak walked Emily Zengel to bring home another run to make it 2-0.
And then Hunterdon Central's Julia Moore slapped a hit just inside the third base line to score two more runs and the Lancers deficit ballooned to 4-0.
