Berkeley Heights Police, Fire Respond to House Fire

On Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at 8:45 am, Berkeley Heights Police, Fire Department and Rescue Squad responded to 38 Angela Way on a report of a heavy smoke condition. Upon police arrival, the officer reported a fully involved structure fire emanating from the 2nd floor. A resident was already outside at that point and officers were able to evacuate residents of adjoining units. The Fire Department was able to extinguish the fire completely by 9:14 am. The Union County Arson Unit responded and found the cause to be electrical in nature. Assisting at the scene were the Chatham, Watchung, and Long Hill Fire Departments.
On Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at 5:17 pm, members of the Berkeley Heights Police Department responded to a Springfield Avenue address to investigate a report of prostitution. An undercover officer responded to the Green Spring Spa in response to an ad on Craig’s List. Upon arrival he was offered sexual services in exchange for money, at which time other officers entered the location and made the arrest. Taken into custody was Guimei Yu, 40, of Berkeley Heights. Yu was brought to police headquarters, processed and charged with soliciting prostitution. Bail was set at $1,000.00 at which time Yu was later released after posting bail. The matter is under further investigation by the Investigations Division.
On Thursday, November 17, 2011 at 12:26 pm, Ptl. Nicholas Franks arrested Kenneth Twitty, 45, of Union. Officers responded to the area of Summit Medical Center on Diamond Hill Road after receiving a report of an intoxicated driver. Ptl. Franks was able to locate the vehicle on Diamond Hill Road near I-78. Subsequent field sobriety tests determined Twitty to be intoxicated, at which time he was brought to police headquarters, processed and charge with driving while intoxicated. Twitty was given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court and released into the custody of a family member.
