Berkeley Heights Mayor Helps Celebrate Nursing Home Week with Visit to Berkeley Meadows

BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ – Not every nursing home resident can say they spent the afternoon rocking out with the mayor.
Berkeley Heights Mayor Joseph Bruno celebrated National Nursing Home week at Berkeley Meadows on Tuesday afternoon with some conversation, a little ice cream, and a rousing rendition of “Mack the Knife.”
“It’s important for me to get to know as many of our residents as I can, and that includes the most senior among us,” Bruno said.
The residents, who clapped along as the mayor sang the song popularized by Bobby Darin in the late 1950s, also had some questions for the mayor, including whether he’s a Democrat or a Republican.
“Yes I am,” Bruno quipped, before saying that although he is a Republican, he is the mayor of everyone in Berkeley Heights.
He also congratulated two of Berkeley Meadows’ oldest residents, 100-year-old Ricarda Delos Reyes and 101-year-old Irene Bernstein.
“Berkeley Meadows Care Center, residence and staff thank Mayor Bruno for joining our celebration during Nursing Home Week,” said Administrator David Weiner.
Berkeley Meadows is a 34-bed care center that received a 5-star rating from the Department of Health and Human Services in 2011. This score means that Berkeley Meadows is rated much above average overall based on health inspections, nursing home staffing and quality measures.
