CRANFORD, NJ – Summit’s varsity field hockey team battled to a 2-2 tie in the pouring rain against worthy opponent Cranford on Tuesday afternoon, October 2nd. The Lady Hilltoppers (4-4) took on the Cranford Cougars (2-5) at the Cougars’ home field.
Ten minutes into the game, Cranford scored their first goal, despite Summit dominating the first half. About 10 minutes later, Summit sophomore Megan Ophel deflected a goal, her first of the season, assisted by senior captain Nikki Sharkin to tie the game at 1-1.
With under a minute to go, Sharkin assisted another to sophomore Kendall Codey, who tipped it in to give Summit the lead at the half, 2 -1.
Looking for an opportunity to tie the game, Cranford had several close scoring attempts. They pulled through eight minutes into the second half scoring a second goal, knotting the game at 2-2.
After intense playing on both sides of the field, the game went into overtime. This 10 minute round of seven versus seven sudden death tests each team’s abilities and endurance. New Summit senior goalie Angelica Angelo made a spectacular diving save as Cranford power forward went in one on one. Both teams had a number of scoring opportunities, but neither were able to capitalize, making the final score 2-2.
After the game, Summit captain Nikki Sharkin was pleased with the way her team played.
“Today we really came together as a team," Sharkin said. "Although we tied, we had great energy the entire time.”
Goalie Angelica Angelo said although they didn't win , it wasa great game.
“We have a new team," Angelo said. " I’m a brand new goalie. We struggled during the beginning of our season, but we are growing as a team and getting stronger. I believe that our team will be a threat in the County and State tournaments.”
