CLARK, N.J. - The defense set the tone for the New Providence Lady Pioneers as they improved their record to 15-2 with a 41-25 victory over Arthur L. Johnson.

“For us it all starts on the defensive end,” New Providence head coach Cap Pazdera said. “I thought we played very well defensively. We were attacking the basket well, just a couple of our shots weren’t going in. Except for the missed layups I thought our team executed well.”

That defense forced numerous Lady Crusader turnovers all game long while offensively the team was led by freshman Sydney Morang and senior Cassandra Squeri. Morang led all scorers with 14 points while Squeri had 13.

Through the first 2:30 of the game, New Providence found themselves down 4-2. That would be the last time the Lady Pioneers trailed in the game, as they went on a 14-1 run to close out the first quarter up 16-5 with 10 of those points coming from Morang.

“We wanted to set the tone early,” Pazdera said. “We always like to get a comfortable lead just so we can take the pressure off our offense and just let the girls settle in.”

The second quarter was all about defense for New Providence as they held Arthur L. Johnson to only two points in the eight minute frame.

At the half New Providence was up 22-7.

The Lady Pioneers carried their momentum into the second half as they scored the first 11 points of the third quarter, for their largest lead of the game at 24 points.

“Second half we just wanted to play good defense and I told the girls we just had to keep attacking the basket,” Pazdera said. “We were getting offensive boards, second chances, we are tough to box out.”

Arthur L. Johnson closed the game on a 16-6 run, but at that point the game was out of reach and Pazdera had his bench in the game.

The Lady Pioneers return to the court Tuesday as they hit the road once again to face Jonathan Dayton at 4 p.m.
