Distribution of Narcotics on School Property/Possession of a Weapon in Sparta (One Arrest)

SPARTA, NJ - A Sparta High School senior is facing drug and weapon charges after he was caught by school officials with narcotics on School grounds Thursday, Jan. 24.  Sparta High School Security Officer Joseph Drossel contacted police headquarters at 11:29 am to advise they had found a student later identified as 18-year-old Eric Roberts in possession of drugs and a knife.  Detectives Terrence Mulligan and Keith Hannam responded to investigate. 

According to school officials, they had independently developed information alleging that Roberts was dealing narcotics inside the school.  Roberts arrived at school at approximately 11:00 am operating a 2007 black Audi.  Roberts was confronted by school officials and security in the parking lot and advised of the allegation.  His vehicle was subsequently searched per school policy by school security personnel and school officials.

Roberts was found to be in possession of a large amount of cash, $4450.00 that were separated into three separate bundles, 50 grams or less of marijuana packaged in separate ziplock  bags for distribution, a 13-inch butterfly knife, a small digital scale along with a box of small ziplock bags.

Roberts who declined to answer any questions was placed under arrest and transported to police headquarters for processing.  He was charged with; Distribution of Narcotics on School Property , Possession of Marijuana, Possession of a Weapon on School Property and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.  Roberts was released several hours later on his own recognizance. He has a required court appearance in Sparta Municipal court on January 31st at 9:00 am
