SUMMIT, NJ - On Thursday Dec. 20, 2012, the Summit Republican City Committee (SRCC) held their second annual Holiday Party at the Summit Elks Lodge.

According to its website, “the Summit Republican Mission is to promote the principles of the Republican Party in Summit though active involvement in local activities, including support of Republican candidates for office, sponsoring events that facilitate open discussion of important political issues, promotion of the party and the principals, organization, of political events and monthly meetings to discuss relevant issues.”

The event was catered and approximately 100 people attended including Chair of the SRCC Lisa Allen, Vice Chair Elizabeth Baamonde, Senator Tom Kean, Jr. and Summit Councilman Robert Rubino.

Rubino said he is a strong supporter of the organization and it was great to see so many new faces.

“I think the Republican Party needs something to celebrate and it's Christmas, so why not,” he said.

Allen, who moved to Summit three years ago, was an advocate for a bipartisan group, No Labels, and during that time her political interest grew. She became the chair of the SRCC in June because she wanted to make a difference in the community.

With two young children and the country on the brink of going over the fiscal cliff, Allen said it was time for people to stand up and fight for the future. In 2013, the SRCC will be focusing on pressing national issues like healthcare and education and how they affect communities like Summit. They are also holding an event in Whippany with a Fox News contributor, as well.

“I’m very impassioned by what’s happening in politics,” Allen said. “We want people to know that we’re fiscally conscious, we care about healthcare and we care about education.”

She said the SRCC encourages people to volunteer or attend functions even if they are not members.

Baamonde, who is also new to the community, has been involved in local and state politics for over five years, and represents the young, upwardly mobile professionals that reside in Summit. She also recently took on a new role as Chair of the Union County Young Republicans. To join the Union County Young Republicans on Facebook click http://www.facebook.com/groups/406693989389786/.

“I really hope we can engage people,” she said.
