MAPLEWOOD, NJ - On Tuesday, Feb. 19, the Maplewood Township Committee met to address a variety of issues in recreation, local parking, and public safety, including the township's purchase of the Maplewood Women's Club building.

The meeting began with a new appointment to the Historic Preservation Commission.  William S. Parrish, Jr., who has a background in public works and construction, was named to the commission by unanimous consent.  Parrish was present for his confirmation, and spoke of using existing buildings as a way of “creating a benefit for the community and preserving the assets that are intact.”

The next major item on the agenda was a recent proposal to expand merchant parking on Woodland Road.   The Committee heard comments from individuals living in the area in question.  According to one concerned citizen, more spaces for commercial parking would jeopardize “the many pedestrians who go up and down our street all day, every day.” Another Maplewood resident cautioned that Woodland Road could become “a virtual parking lot.” The Committee decided to discuss the Woodland Road Ordnance at a later meeting, after gathering more community feedback.

After this, the Committee approved a series of ordnances.  These included measures permitting “the employment of off-duty Maplewood police officers by certain contractors, utility companies and others.”

Near the end of the meeting, the Committee discussed adding the Maplewood Women’s Club building to the 2013 Capital Budget.  Mayor De Luca spoke enthusiastically in favor of this move and Committee member Gerard W. Ryan described this as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” The Committee at large embraced this plan, since the Club could open up new parking spaces and new opportunities for promoting culture and entertainment in Maplewood.

The Committee’s next meeting will place on Tuesday, March 5.  For more information, visit http://www.twp.maplewood.nj.us/.
