FAIRFIELD, NJ - The Special Olympics of New Jersey now has $7,373 more in funds to designate to their cause,  and all thanks goes to the Fairfield Police Department for their fundraising efforts.

The Special Olympics sponsors the Plane Pull annually.  According to their website, the NJ Special Olympics’ mission is:  “To provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.”

On the morning of Saturday, September 29th, 38 teams gathered to compete at Newark Airport, all with the same goal of raising money for New Jersey’s Special Olympics athletes.  Anyone is invited to participate on a team.

According to the Fairfield’s Finest team Captain,  Detective Robert Sanger, the team was made up not only of Fairfield police officers but also,  “a Fairfield Department of Public works employee and his children,  an Essex County inspector,  local business owners, police department family members and private citizens. The diversity of our team members shows just how important the mission of Special Olympics has become in Fairfield.”

The rules of the competition require teams of 20 to compete to pull a Boeing 737 weighing over 93,000 lbs. on the United tarmac.  Each team has a captain and they are judged in 3 different categories:

* Fastest Pull:
The first team to pull the plane 12 feet in the least amount of time wins.

* Lowest Combined Weight Pull:
The team with the lowest team weight, to pull the plane 12 feet, in the least amount of time wins.

* Top Fundraiser:
Team that raises the most amount of money prior to the event wins.

In the Fastest Pull category, the Official Results list Fairfield’s Finest coming in at 10th Place out of 38 teams,  with an incredible time of 7.78 seconds. They easily beat the average team pull time of 9.59 seconds.  The winning team Elmwood Park PBA was timed at 6.45 seconds.

However it was in the third category of fundraising that Fairfield’s Finest outshone the other teams. When they presented their donation of $7,373 to the Special Olympics of New Jersey, it was the  largest amount received from any of the teams that participated in this year’s competition.  In fact, over the past eleven years, Fairfield’s Finest has contributed over $58,000 to this worthwhile cause.

Overall, all teams combined raised $82,591 for the Special Olympics of New Jersey.
