MILLBURN, NJ - Many towns in New Jersey are in need of help post-Hurricane Sandy.  Recently, Millburn Superintendent Dr. James Crisfield launched a partnership with Sayreville called “Millburn gives back.”

The goal is to provide immediate financial relief and to create a long-term student-centered relationship with the Sayreville public schools. Millburn's PTO and other organizations will also be involved.

Deerfield Elementary School was originally scheduled to hold their a Polar Bear Parade and a Jersey Cares Coat Drive as two separate events, but upon hearing about the new initiative with Sayreville they combined the two. While the parade was canceled on Friday, Dec. 7, due to the inclement weather, some students still dressed up in polar bear hats.

When it is rescheduled, the parade will have students walk 10 laps around the circle in front of the school and use polar bear trackers to time themselves. Each child obtained sponsors and all of the money raised will go towards gift cards for Sayreville students.

Principal Kelly Salazar was upset about the fundraiser being cancelled, but was quite impressed with the financial contributions made.  She was also excited about the approximately 500 coats donated.

For the past 14 years, The Jersey Cares Coat Drive has mobilized the collection and distribution of over two hundred thousand “gently used” winter coats for men, women, children and infants in need.
