MILLBURN, NJ - On a cold Thursday evening, with many people cheering on the Yankees or watching the vice presidential debate, the Education Foundation of Millburn/Short Hills held their opening event of the school year with a “Millburn Schools Rock” fundraiser at Martini Bar & Bistro.

The Northstar Session, TNS, a Los Angeles-based band performed throughout the evening while people enjoyed food and drinks and schmoozed. TNS was featured last year on NBCʼs hit series Parenthood.

The Education Foundation of Millburn-Short Hills is a nonprofit organization that provides innovative and progressive programs, technology and staff development, which helps ensure continued educational excellence for Millburn Public Schools, enriching the academic experience.

Co-president of the foundation, Amy Talbert, said it was definitely going to be a nice night out for a good cause. Talbert, who has three children in the district, is excited to celebrate 20 years of the Education Foundation existing in Millburn.

“I just feel very passionate about education in this town,” she said. “Our main mission is to enhance our children’s education.”

With budget cuts occurring often, there just isn’t enough money to give children everything they need to succeed, she said. The Foundation holds events throughout the school year that raise money for the students. Talbert said she hopes more parents become members because the members help decide where the funds are donated.

Last year, the Foundation started a new communication program in the high school with a broadcast lab that teaches students how to film and edit movies.  Consequently, the district held their first student-run film festival last year.

Micole Richter, who chaired the event, said she thought it would be a nice night out for parents without their kids. To have a few drinks and see a band, while helping the school is always worthwhile, she said.

“I love the fact that it benefits all the children throughout the district,” Richter said.

Laura Hersh, who is a partner at Martini Bar & Bistro, but is also a parent in the district, helped set up the evening and arrange for the band to play. She said because most people have not heard of Northstar Session, TNS, they were in for a treat.

“We’re just really happy to be able to host an event for the Education Foundation,” Hersh said.

Orazio and Alyssa Russo were enjoying their night out while their four children were at home. They are active with the Foundation and believe it is an important part of the community. Alyssa spearheaded the film festival, which will take place again in April.

“I think they make a difference,” she said. “I think they bring attention in areas that need assistance and then they’re able to fund them.”
