SUMMIT, NJ - The Historic Tour of Summit is now available free for download at the Apple application store, allowing residents and guests to use their smart phones and devices to discover emerging opportunities in downtown Summit.

There are 18 stops on the tour and it lasts about 35 minutes, with each stop featuring a different aspect about downtown Summit. It is currently compatible with iPhones, iPads and iPod iOS software.

“Downtown Summit is historic and this application will provide a faster way for people to get more acquainted with the area,” said Mayor Ellen Dickson.

Each stop on the application provides the user with a detailed text background history, accompanied by a vocal feature and a variety of photos.

The tour features stops at the Train Station, the Horse Trough, Old Town Hall, Summit Diner, Village Green, Summit Middle School, Central Presbyterian Church, Summit Library, Summit YMCA, Summit Post Office, the Opera House, Summit City Hall, Summit Playhouse, Grand Summit Hotel, The Carter House, Municipal Golf Course, Beacon Hill Club, Reeves-Reed Arboretum and Twin Maples.

Amy Cairns Harrison, City of Summit Environmental Commission Chairman, always had a strong interest in technology, and gave her the incentive to feature her town in an innovative and savvy manner.

“The media rich, interactive, tour experience with a photo of each stop allows participants to follow a recommended tour route or design their own route through Summit’s beautiful historic business district, in and around famous landmarks, residences, shops and restaurants,” Harrison said.

Harrison went on to discuss how the tour is timed out for users to see the beauty of each stop. She mentioned how the Tiffany windows in Calvary Episcopal Church look stunning in a certain time of light and made sure to incorporate that timeframe into the walking tour.

Funding for this application was provided by Summit Downtown Inc, along with the City of Summit. The town is looking to develop an additional five applications, divulging the deeper aspects of Summit for all to enjoy.

The Android application is scheduled to release next month.
